William11 Lewis Mansfield was born 24 Mar l899 @ Jonesport d 11 Aug l948 @ Sanford, b'd Howard Cem., Winslow, Me) m'd 7 May l920 Lila Mildred Farrington of South China, Maine (b 27 Mar l90l d 26 Nov 1991) dau of William Owen & Mary (Metcalf) Farrington.
William11 graduated from Jonesport High School and while attending Bowdoin College, was called into the service during WW1. He became Company Com'dr., Captain, Co. G., l03rd Infantry, 43rd Div. In February l94 l, he and his National Guard Company were inducted into Federal Service, moving to Camp Blanding, Fla., along with the remainder of the Division. William served in the South Pacific Combat Area, receiving a medical discharge, at the rank of Colonel, with a heart condition that later caused his untimely death in l948.
After the war he was employed as Physical Director and Mathematics teacher for the Winslow, China and Vassalboro school systems. He also was a life insurance agent for Northwestern Mutual. During the time he was coaching at Winslow High School, his basketball teams won many Class A state championships and were "runners-up" for New England. He was named to the Maine Sports Hall of Fame on 4 June 1995, 47 years after his death. His daughter, Phyllis12 accepted the award on Willam's11 behalf.
The Mansfield Memorial Clinic Bldg., attached to the Thayer Hospital, Waterville, and the new Winslow High School Gymnasium, were both named in his honor. A pamphlet entitled "He Served His Country Well" has been written by Robert E. Anderson, covering the life and times of William Lewis Mansfield.
