PROCTOR, BENJAMIN, Ipswich 1678, prob. s. of the first John. GEORGE, Dorchester, freem. 17 May 1637, by w. Edith had Hannah, b. perhaps in Eng.; Abigail, b. 24 Aug. 1637; Thomas, 16 Dec. 1638, if we may dare to contradict the rec. wh. is 1637, or it has been thot. that the 1639 day was that of his bur. and he may have been brot. from Eng.; Samuel, 8 Nov. 1640; and d. 29 Jan. 1662. His wid. rem. to Boston to live with s. Samuel, made excor. with her of the will of 27 Jan. 1662, as in Geneal. Reg. XI. 173, 4. Hannah m. 3 Mar. 1653, John Lowell; and Abigail m. 8 Mar. 1660, Joseph Lowell of Boston. JOHN, Ipswich, came, 1635, aged 40, from London, in the Susan and Ellen, with w. Martha, 28; and ch. John, 3; and Mary, 1; and in few yrs. was sett. at Salem. His w. d. 13 June 1659; but he took sec. w. of the same bapt. name, wh. outliv. him. His will of 28 Aug 1672, pro. 28 Nov. foll. names w. and ch. John, Joseph, Benjamin, ds. Martha White, Abigail Varney; Sarah Dodge; and Hannah Weeden, or some such name. JOHN, Ipswich, s. of the preced. b. in Eng. rem. in few yrs. to Salem, perhaps freem. 1690, m. Dec. 1662, Eliz. d. of John Thorndike, had prob. by a sec. w. Eliz. Bassett, m. 1 Apr. 1674, William, b. 6 Feb. foll.; Sarah, 28 Jan. 1677; Samuel, 11 Jan. 1686; Elisha, 28 Apr. 1687, d. next yr.; and Abigail, 27 Jan. 1692; of wh. the eldest two were imprison. in the execrable fanaticism of 1692. These ch. were prob. discharg. without trial; but the mo. was one of the first accus. of witcher. and her h. (to wh. the first w. had brot. ch. Martha, b. 4 June 1666; Mary, 26 Oct. 1667, d. soon; John, 28 Oct. 1668; Mary, again, 30 Jan. 1670; and Thorndike, 15 July 1672, and that w. d. next mo.), for showing proper regard for her, as Hutch. II. 26 and 55 tells, fell under equal suspicion. Both were tried and condemn. on 5th, and on him, 19 Aug. was inflict. the punishm. of death, wh. she escap. by reason of her pregnancy, and bef. the time elaps. in wh. she should have suffer. the power of delusion and the devil passed away. Yet four yrs. later, the wid. had to beseech the legislat. to order relic of her husband's prop. from the forfeiture. See Felt II. 484. Too brief is this statement of Mt. Felt, and slightly seems the case to have been misapprehend. by him. No doubt, Gedney, the judge of Probate, was as much bound to maintain the technical law of Eng. in opposition to that of humanity, as his superiors of the other tribunal to assert the institute of Moses against that of common sense; and she "being convict. and sentenc. of and for the detestab. crime of witchcr." was "look. upon as d.-in-law, and left out of the will of her b. and nothing giv. her therein, nor order. her upon the distrib. of the est. of said P." and the Ct. had the requisite illumina. to decree, that when she produc. the pardon she bec. alive again. The h.'s will was made 2 Aug. so three days bef. the conviction. JOSEPH, Ipswich, m. Martha, d. of Francis Wainwright, had Daniel, b. 30 Jan. 1680. PETER, Concord, s. of Robert, m. 30 Jan. 1689, Mary, d. of James Patterson of Billerica. RICHARD, Yarmouth 1643. RICHARD, Boston, freem. 1690. ROBERT, Concord, freem. 10 May 1643, m. Dec. 1645, Jane Hildreth, perhaps d. of Richard, had Sarah, b. 12 Oct. 1646; Gershom, 13 May 1648; Mary, 8 Apr. 1650; rem. to Chelmsford, had Peter; Eliz. 21 Jan. 1657; and Lydia, 19 Feb. 1660, d. at 6 mos. SAMUEL, Dorchester, s. of George, a cooper at Boston, by w. Mary had Mary, b. 22 Dec. 1671. THORNDIKE, Salem, s. of sec. John, by W. Hannah had Nathan, b. 18 Oct. 1698. Of this name in 1834, four had been gr. at Harv. one at Yale. and four at other N. E. coll.
