25.  George3 Meehan  (James2, John1)

Son of James & Rachel (White) Meehan  b. circ. 1848 d. 21 Feb  1916, (G.S.) m’d 22 Mar 1874 Mrs. Eliza Charlotte (Matthews)-Jess as her second husband, b. circ. 1851 d. 29 June 1906 (G.S.) dau of Thomas & Mary Ann (Thompson) Matthews.  Both George3 and Eliza are b’d on a Meehan family plot at Woodlawn Cemetery, Westbrook, Me.  This family, with children, emigrated from Canada to the United States in 1892. [Record attached].  Information from Doris5 (Laffin) Laverty states that Eliza Charlotte Matthews was previously married to a man by the name of [William] Jess and divorced.  She and Wm. Jess  had one child by the name of John W. Jess, who was approximately 4 years of age when she married George3 Meehan.  There is a John William Jess buried in the Meehan plot, Woodland Cemetery, Westbrook, Me., b circ 1872, d 18 Jan 1953, age 80 yrs.  Eliza also had a younger sister by the name of Susan (Matthews) Matthews who lived in Westbrook, Me., b circ 1853  d. 25 Feb 1931 age 78 yrs. also b’d at Woodlawn Cemetery, Westbrook, Me.

In a Family Search “1881 Canadian Census-Household Record” we find this family listed as George3 Meehan, father, a “Journalier”, [daily worker].age 33, Leiza Meehan [Eliza] spouse, age 28, with children by the name of John age 9, James age 5,  Thomas age 4, George age 3 and Mary Jeane born November, 6/12th yr of age.  The child John age 9 would be John Jess mentioned in the last paragraph.  The surprise came with a child named James age 5.  We have no knowledge of this child, even today.  James would have been about 16 years of age at the time the remainder of the family emigrated [1892] to the United States, therefore, he might have stayed in Canada to make his own life or he might have died young.  From the 1900 microfiche Census records obtained at the Westbrook, Me. Library for this same family, it gives all the children’s names but it also mentioned that Eliza Meehan was “the mother of nine children, of which seven were still living.”  This apparently would mean John Jess, Thomas4, George4, Mary Jane4, Henry4, Robert4 and Elizabeth4 Meehan.  We presume the James age 5 named above would made #eight of the nine.  This year, 2009, we discovered there was another child [#9] by the name of Edwin Walter4 Meehan b.22 March 1889 or after Elizabeth4. This information came via baptismal records of the Anglican Church of Halesboro, Portneuf, Quebec as discovered by James6 Meehan Jr.
